Week ending 5/28/10

On Saturday, we did 2 hours each of sanding. I hate sanding. It's physically demanding, boring as heck, tedious and unrewarding. The back door is done and I estimate we have about 23 hours to go on sanding this coat as follows:

4 interior doors at 4 hours each
3 bedroom sliders at 2 hours each
1 kitchen slider at 1 hour each

This is why shellac takes so long. It's taking 27 hours just to sand one coat, and this coat only touched 6 of 11 windows, 1 of 3 exterior doors and 4 of 4 interior doors. For the windows and exterior doors, they have to be done in sections to avoid wet surfaces touching, so it wasn't even a full coat on those parts.

Week ending 5/21/10

On Saturday, C and I spent about 5 hours each and got a coat of shellac done. It's a small accomplishment in a big project, BUT that means we only have one coat to go! There's a lot of work to do for the next coat (about 25 hours of sanding plus prep, putty, and pre-clean) but the next coat is the LAST one and it's small compared to all the coats up until now. After the shellac coat is done, we just need to get the sanding done and then we can get the interior paint done and paves the way for the flooring! Yay! There will be a lot of buffing to do, but that's not on the critical path to the flooring so it's not high priority.

Week ending 5/14/10

On Saturday and Sunday, we worked on the pile of boxes from electronic and wiring equipment Chris purchased in the last few months. It's a huge improvement not to have those boxes all over the kitchen and dining area. Once again, we're in that position of having a big pile of boxes and trash that we don't have room in the trash for. It will probably take a 4-5 weeks to get all the boxes and packing material out. Yes, I could drive the stuff somewhere and be rid of it now but why bother? It's not like we have a perfect house and the only thing amiss is a big pile of boxes and packing materials - we have stuff all over that doesn't belong. It just wouldn't pay to spend hours doing this.

On Sunday, C and I committed to doing the next coat of shellac next weekend. It's good for both of us because it puts pressure on me to be ready (have to finish sanding and do pre-work). He's doing this on the weekends to move us along, and it will really help. He's great!

On Monday, I spent half an hour sanding the back door and used a nail set to pound the kitchen trim nails. They didn't all go in smoothly when I put them in with the nail gun and I'm not sure why. They still didn't go in nicely with the nail set so maybe the wood is just too hard. Oh well, I can probably hide a lot of it with putty.

I also did 15 minutes of decluttering - I took all the stuff from our weekend project out to the garage.

Wednesday I spend 2.25 hours on the windows in preparation for the weekend.

On Friday, I did another half hour of prep for the weekend and wend to the local hardware store to get supplies.

Week ending 5/7/10

Bad week, got nothing, zilch, nada, not even a minute done. I'm working very hard at my new business.
