Week ending 6/26/09

Wednesday I spent 2 hours working on the new shade - argh, but I got it ordered and figured out to install it.

Thursday I spent 1/2 hour and finished sanding last coat and puttied door. I'm only about 3 weeks behind which in construction time is more on schedule than is to be expected.

I buffed the bay windows and now they are ready for shade. I need to get the first shade delivered and installed so I know it's right then I can order the 3 shades for the bay. That will be so good to have them up - they are right on the front of house and are one of the most prominent features

Friday I spent another .25 hours, and am now only 2 weeks behind on schedule. Total hours to date on windows and woodwork: 269.75.

Week ending 6/19/09

On Monday I got just 15 min of sanding done. I got the ducts cleaned so not much done. It seems like I should be equally or almost as productive with someone here working but it never works out that way. Total on woodwork and windows to date: 267 hours.

Tuesday I was busy with appointments and orthodontic pain, but today was a landmark day in that first window shade arrived. But, mounting the brackets is going to be a huge pain. The window jamb slants upward from back to front (like a beveled picture frame), so the surface to which the blind bracket is to be mounted is not level (it's higher in front than back). The bracket has to be level, so that means I have to shim it. That's a minor pain, one I anticipated but wasn't sure about until I got the bracket in hand. The real pain is that the bracket has no flat surface on which I can use a level. I'm not sure what to do - I'm going to the hardware store tomorrow to see if I can find a level that will work and to buy shims. All house work stops until this blind is up. I cannot wait to have it up and have one finished, nice looking window with a functioning blind. Ah, the little things you take for granted until you don't have them.

The second problem is that the header on the blind, where all the mechanics are, is missing an end cap. It's in the package, but it popped off and I'm unwilling to risk damaging the shade by trying to put it on myself. If I damage the shade, I have no recourse and will have to buy a new one. Plus, I am entitled to an undamaged shade, so I want the company to remedy it. But, that means sending the blind back and waiting. Unfortunately, I haven't actually seen it up, so I still don't know if it fits (i.e. I measured correctly) and I like it. The instructions say not to operate the shade until it is installed, and anything you do that's not per the instructions may void the warranty. So, first thing tomorrow I'll be calling the company and sorting this mess out. Fun.

Wednewday I talked to customer service, they assured me I cannot break the shade so I popped the end cap back on and it's fixed. But, you know it couldn't possibly go that smoothly. The problem? The shade doesn't fit, it's too wide. Somehow, I measured wrong which is why I only ordered one. Measuring for shades is so tricky that it costs $60 per window to have done, and mine are extra tricky because of the bevel. But two good things came out of it - I figured out how to measure (I'm going to use the width of the sash {the moving part of the window} which I know fits in the jamb with a bit of room to spare) and I saw the brackets that came with the shade, and saw a drawing of the brackets for my 3/4" pleat shades compared to 3/8" and the smaller brackets will be easier to install. I'd be fine with either size, I only ordered the 3/4 because it was suggested for a more contemporary look.

I finished one more box from the unpacking. I have things to get rid of piling up - it's so easy now that things have been in boxes for 3+ years.

Week ending 6/12/09

I'm switching to a weekly post since our progress is now so slow. It will help me stay more current on the blog. Today as I'm posting this it is actually August 10, so I'm almost 2 months behind.

Monday and Tuesday I got nothing done due to being sick.

Wednesday I got notice that 1st shade is being shipped tomorrow! I did 15 minutes of sanding - I'm still feeling a bit sick but I wanted to at least make some small progress.

Thursday I spent an hour sanding windows. No wonder our progress is so slow - it took a full hour just to get the jamb and trim of 3 windows sanded. That's just one of three coats for that part of those windows. The upper sash, lower sash and jamb/trim all have to be done separately, with 3 coats with sanding and cleaning between plus final buffing at end.

Friday - Our internet has been down since 1:00 yesterday which is so inconvenient. I have to go to a coffee shop, library or Kinko's to do what I need to. I can't do banking, bills, etc. because it keeps going down, we keep fixing it and it goes down again. It's hard to diagnose problem when it's up and downtime is sporadic.

I managed to do 15 min of window/door sanding, trying to get last coat sanded. I finished at 9:15 but really wanted to at least do a little.

windows - making progress

Today I spent 45 minutes finishing the east window in the living room and got the woodwork completely done! That makes 3 of 12 windows that are totally done. Total to date on windows and woodwork: 265.25 hours.

The 3 bay windows will be done soon and then the shades can be ordered. I also have a big window in the den which has been done for a while but I since it's a large window I wanted to order some of the smaller ones first so I don't make a mistake on a more expensive shade.

3 hours on windows, but hit a milestone!

Today I spent 2 hours putting a coat of shellac on. 4 windows (out of 12) are done except for final sand and buff. 1 of the 3 doors is totally done, except for trim, which will be installed after flooring. I ordered first shade, and am so excited! I wish I didn't have to wait 2-3 weeks for it to ship. I could order all four (for the 4 windows that are almost done or done), but want to make sure one is right so I don't make a huge mistake. I'd rather waste the cost of one shade than the cost of 12.

Total hours on windows and woodwork to date: 264.5

Here are two shots of the side door in progress so you can see how great the shellac looks.

The top part is done (the wood has a more gold tone)

I also started spray painting the squeaks on the floor so I can fix them before putting flooring in. I want to make sure I've identified them all because once the flooring is in it will be much harder to fix squeaks. This is definitely a case of worse before better - now our nasty floor is covered with black spray paint smudges.

My floor is now covered in these marks:
